IELTS tests all of your English skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) and reflects the way in which English is used in real life. The test is designed to evaluate the language ability of people who want to work or study in countries where English is the main language of communication.

IH Barcelona offers test dates every month of the year. Tests are held on Saturdays or Thursdays.

More than 2 million people take the IELTS test every year in more than 1,000 locations.

The two versions of the IELTS test

There are two versions of the IELTS test and the reason you're doing the IELTS test will decide which version you do:

  • The Academic version is mainly for people who want to do an undergraduate or postgraduate university course or join a professional organisation.
  • The General Training version measures proficiency in a practical, everyday context and is often a Visa requirement for people planning to migrate to an English-speaking country, join a training programme below degree level or do work experience.

If you are applying to an organisation, it's very important to check with them to make sure that you do the correct IELTS test.

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment.
